Red Faction Guerrilla Review (360) |

We started playing this at the weekend and after being allowed to play the Single Player a couple of months back, we were not holding out too many hopes. But we consider ourselves to have been overly harsh. Single Player Missions With around 120 missions, this game is going to keep you entertained for a long time. The environment is superb depicting the surface of the planet Mars in all its red glory. You are introduced to your Brother who is working for the Faction and then you are shown how to mine salvage which is like a currency in the game. Whilst on the first mining mission your Brother is killed and you are attacked by the EDF (Earth Defence Force) who want to ensure that all property on the planet is owned and run by their corporation. Whilst you are being attacked a few characters come to your aid, who you find out to be friends of your late brother and who are Red Faction members, a group of people that are looking to overthrow the EDF on the planet. You will encounter different types of mission ranging from the liberating of Red Faction members that are being attacked in their homes through to destroying the EDF property. There are plenty of achievements to be had and quite a few unlockables in game to achieve. Pretty much all of the environment is destructable, so this leads to a more strategic approach needed when attempting to take out the EDF in a firefight. Physics are spot on, so a building can fall in different ways, or the explosion of a fuel canister can project the poor EDF character in to the air and land with good ragdoll effects. Vehicles can be taken control of but the planets roads do seem to be narrow and quite heavy with other traffic so its not always the best method of moving around. Your character can run and even sprint and there doesn't seem to be any let down in speed as with other games as your character becomes exhausted. This could be deemed a minor annoyance, but we did not feel that it hindered the game in anyway. With plenty of unlockables in-game and Gamerscore Achievements this is one title that you will not want to put down in a longwhile. Multiplayer The great Multiplayer has a multitude of online modes and 21 maps that will keep the most avid online gamer fixated to their screen from now until the release of Modern Warefare 2. We have only dipped our toe in the online water, but we did unlock a few additional modes without too much worry. The smoothness of online play and the current online community adds to the enjoyment of this game. We think THQ have come up with a possible Game of The Year title here and it DLC is added in future then that will only go to strengthening the already powerful title. Only one bugbear with the MP is that no vehicles are used, its a minor point but perhaps something that can be addressed with an update. 9/10 |
