Ok lets get straight down to business...
Create a Fighter The choices within this feature are good but not immense. Characters can be tweaked but they all seem to look similar if you take a way the skin tone and tattoos. We would have liked to have seen more ability to create a character that is unique or at least be able to create those Jet Li and Bruce Lee look-a-likey. We know that neither of these people are / were UFC fighters but you know that you just wouldn't mind playing them in this type of game. So after spending 20 minutes making our gawd awful looking fighter we put him to the test in the Career Mode portion of the game. Career Mode Now we can tell that this game is easy to pick up and play but will take quite a bit of time and dedication to master, the multitude of moves are astounding and bewildering at the same time. Talking of time has anyone got an idea as to what the "playing time" number is within the Game Progression menu? We were playing for well over 2 hours and then checked this statistics and were told we had play time of a little over 27 minutes. Now either the game only counts actual match time and doesn't take in to consideration all the extra time to prepare for the matches or its plain and simply "broke". Any way back to the career mode. You start off with being able to choose 3 different CPU opponents. We lost the first match as we were getting to grips with the controls (that's our excuse anyway). Basic fighting controls are relatively intuitive and the animations are pretty spot on, apart from a few times that we clearly missed the opponent but they staggered back feining a hit (weird that). Once the match is finished you receive an email detailing yours and other opponents match results and ranking statistics. You then need to either Rest, Training or Sparring. If you "Rest" then you recuperate some of your spent stamina. If you choose "Training" then you get to choose either Strength, Speed or Cardio all of which have options of Light, Moderate or Intense. None of which offer the player anything other than a selection process and the decrease in Stamina. This we feel is a bit detached and could have been worked on better by the developers. If you choose "Sparring" then you at least get some activity which you take part in though the brief given is to go on the defensive and block your sparring partners attacks, we found it more appealing to go on the offensive and kick ten bags of brown stuff out of him instead. If you do this successfully then you are awarded points that you can put towards tweaking the skills of your fighter. Fights are usually anywhere from 2 - 12 weeks in advance, so we suggest that the week before the fight (shown on the calendar) that you "Rest" up so as to have plenty of Stamina available for the fight :) Once the fight comes around you need to select "Action" which will take you straight into the "Octagon Cage". Fights comprise of three, five minute rounds with emphasis initially on Standing Work and then Ground Work where the submission and dirty tactics come in to play. We found that out of the 9 matches we have had so far using the "LB" Shoulder Button and alternating between the "A" and "B" keys seems to produce some dramatic "High Kicks to the Head" which punishes your opponent and normally leads to a victory either as a "KO" or a "TKO". We haven't tried this on-line yet, but hope that this simple sequence is easily defended by a more worthy opponent. Once you have won your match you may get sponsorship deals this is anything from a magazine photoshoot to being awarded sponsorship logos to place on your shorts which adds extra cred when you are next in the cage. This game is all about cred. We are still literally only just in to the first few fights and so at present our review is limited, after a few more lengthy session we will add to this review. Other features of the game include, exhibition mode - where you can either fight with the CPU opponent or another gamer on your console using another controller. There is also classic mode - where you get to relive some of the matches that have happened in the past, here you can rewrite history becoming the victor in a past event that your character lost. There is also the Live mode - where you can take your fighter on line and compete in either "Ranked" or "Unranked" matches against fellow games around the globe. Beware of the players that disconnect before they lose which is just poor sportsmanship. There doesn't appear to be any penalty for doing this as it looks as though your internet connection has dropped out and so THQ thought it a good idea to not penalise for this. We are really impressed with the realism of this game and the graphics, sound and atmosphere go some way to being one of the best (if not the best) fighter on the scene at the moment. We would like to award UFC 2009 Undisputed by THQ 8/10 |
